Baby, The Leopard In “Bringing Up Baby” (1938)
Nissa, the leopard, played "Baby" in the movie Bringing Up Baby. The leopard was allowed to roam freely on set until one close call with Katharine Hepburn. Hepburn had been wearing a skirt with metal pieces in it and had turned abruptly making Nissa lunge for her back. The animal trainer used a whip to stop the animal from hurting her. Other than that, Hepburn was fearless around Nissa and even liked to pet her. Cary Grant on the other hand didn't like being around her as much and a double was used in scenes where they had to make contact. In some cases, a puppet was used instead of the leopard.
Cat, Holly Golightly’s Cat In “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961)
Orangey played "Cat" in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. Audrey Hepburn said that throwing Cat out the window onto a rainy street was the most distasteful thing she had to do on film. Something I found very interesting was the outcome from the movie on shelters. There was a higher demand for ginger tomcats after the movie was released. That bodes well for me as I am a ginger tomcat!
Rhubarb, The Millionaire Cat in "Rhubarb" (1951)
I had originally planned on doing these three movies for my blog post. When I went to look up the cat who played Rhubarb, I discovered that this role was also cast to Orangey! Orangey is the only feline double-winner of the Patsy Award, an Oscar for animals. He first won this award for the movie Rhubarb. He later won it for the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. At the opening of the film, children were given "autographed" pictures from Rhubarb the cat, signed with a paw print. I think I would love to do that someday!
